Temporalmandibular Joint (TMJ) Disorder is a chronic or acute illness affecting the jaw muscles, neck, temporalmandibular joints and the teeth.
Symptoms associated with TMJ disorder include:
- facial/jaw pain
- neck/ shoulder pain
- sensitive teeth
- worn, chipped or cracked teeth
- ringing in the ears
- clicking or popping in the jaw joints
The causes of TMJ disorder include but are not limited to stress, diet, teeth grinding, teeth clenching and teeth misalignment.
Although the causes of TMJ disorder are so varied, they can often be treated or managed with a removable orthotic or nightguard. In some cases, restoration of the biting surfaces of the teeth, orthodontics, dental bridges or implants can be considered to restore harmony and prevent future problems.
